John Barrass, new Deputy Chief Executive of APCIMS
3 July 2007
John Barrass has been appointed as the new Deputy Chief Executive
of APCIMS, the trade association for stockbrokers and wealth managers,
in succession to Guy Sears.
John was previously Head of CFA Institute Centre for Financial
Market Integrity in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He started
his working life as a member of HM Diplomatic Service, specialising
in Soviet and East European Affairs, but after 12 years moved into
financial regulation at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
He subsequently joined the Securities and Investments Board (SIB)
to become head of its international relations department and went
from there into International Policy Coordination and EU Affairs
at the FSA.
John's regulatory work focussed on international and European developments,
a theme he continued with the members at CFA Institute Centre. He
participated in the precursors to CESR in Paris and was responsible
for the full range of FSA's interests in the International Organisation
of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). He has an excellent set of working
relationships with opinion formers and others in key international
financial centres in Europe and elsewhere as a result of this work,
as well as with government, regulation, and the financial industry
in the UK.
David Bennett, APCIMS Chief Executive, said: "I am delighted
to welcome John on board at APCIMS. He brings an ideal breadth and
depth of experience and skills as we remodel the work of APCIMS
to deal with the world after MiFID implementation. John will help
us to influence the regulatory dialogue in accordance with our members'
views as we ensure that APCIMS' voice is heard in the public policy
processes affecting the future development of the financial industry."
John Barrass said: "Joining APCIMS presents an exciting set
of new challenges and I look forward to working with one of the
world's largest groups in the growing industry of wealth management.
APCIMS is widely recognised as a key voice in influencing policy
in the UK and across the EU and it will be a privilege and an honour
to serve and work with its members in accomplishing our goals."
John started at APCIMS on 2 July 2007.
